PCB coating

what do you call those coatings on pcb's which is often green and where can i buy it online?

PCB makers call it "solder-resist".
I don't know whether small quantities are available to buy, but at least you have a phrase to Google with

NB It's available in several other colours too.

Hi jondavis.

It's also called solder-mask, and there is a thread in this topic called "DIY solder mask" which suggests substitute products you can buy locally.
PCBoards usually also have a clear "conformal coating" as a final application which can be found in small quantities from many parts suppliers.
