How do you make an audio potentiometer into a variable resistor?

Connect wipe to ground? Output to ground?

I have some fo the attached mic capsules and was told that I could get better results by switching the 6.8 external resistor.

The new resistor would be calculated by placing a variable resistor in its place and turning it until the output voltage is half that of the power source.

Please help.

Potentiometers are always variable resistors. If you want it to be a voltage divider, then connect one side to ground, the other to input, the middle to output. But there are times you can use just one side and the middle as well. In that circuit, if you wanted to replace RL with a pot, you would just use the middle and either of the sides.
