Given the fact that various sources have different output voltages that could range anywhere from 1V or below to 2.5V or above (if talking about unbalanced), how could one go about 'regulating' this to maintain a constant voltage no matter what voltage the source is outputing at?
This would obviously be in relation to a preamp with multiple source inputs. I am looking to avoid having to change the volume based on which source I am currently using.
Is there any simple way of doing this?

Best solution is to put attenuators for the high levels externally in the cables.
Other options like ALC presently found in walkmans (AVLC) will modify and deteriote the signal.
A good design could be a step attenuator with relays that does the job automatically by detecting the signal level.
LM 3914/15 can be used for this purpose as A/D.
