Default modular potentiometers

This may sound kinda dumb but exactly how do they work?

This is what I was looking at (model 51)

Do you buy them separate and you can then join them for a ganged pot?

Well waddaya know, I actually had a few 4-ganged pots lying around in the spare parts bin along with a nice pushbutton switch to save me a few more bucks.

My project's gonna be damn near free.
