Does anyone from Vancouver, BC know of surplus or used industrial or electronics stores that might have things like heatsinks, transformers, oscilloscopes, etc.? eBay may have cheap stuff, but shipping across the border of large items is not cheap.

RP electronics has some surplus stuff, but most of what they have is pricey..

I found it cheaper to get the items on Ebay, there are quite a few sellers in canada.

Main Electronics and Lee's Electronics are a couple doors away from each other at Main and 29th Ave and they have the occasional thing.

If you are really looking for used stuff, start ripping apart old computer and electronics from garage sales and the big bins behind industrial firms. Heck, just ask around for them. These have sinks, trafos, etc.

Last September during an annual junkyard competition in which I participate, a team member and I found a Mita photocopier in a vacant lot near Brentwood Mall. We hauled it back to the competition and every team proceeded to rip useful stuff out of it, including a timing circuit, a power supply, various DC motors and even the heating element out of the fuser.

How about a road trip to Boeing Surplus down in Seattle? There's cool stuff there. I also found a couple of great surplus dealers in Portland (I think one of them was called Wacky Williy's).

Amateur radio swap meets are an excellent source of parts and gear.

That'll be fun bringing back through Canadian customs...

Actually, I've brought stuff back from Boeing Surplus in Kent and it's quite easy.

Keeps the receipts.... you're paying dirt cheap and it's proof that your carbon fibre only cost $10/lb (which about 1% of the real cost). Most of that stuff is used or considered NFG by Boeing so it can be declared as such.

If you get tools, use them on something, then stick 'em in the toolbox in your trunk. If you have used them to fix or adjust something, then you don't have to say if they are being brought in as new.
