Confused with diodes

What is the difference between schottkey and fast recovery diodes?
Some say you should use shottkeys in PSUs for audio (preamps, DACs etc), others say fast recovery diodes. Is it the same thing?

What is the advantage of the above diodes vs. common rectifying diodes like e.g. 1n4001?

Schottky diodes are made of silicone and aluminium and they are extemely fast and have also a very low voltage drop which is good if you want to keep the losses low in especially switched mode power supplies at low voltaged like 5 volts or so.

Drawback: Can't handle very high voltage, expensive, can't handle huge currents

Fast recovery diodes are plain P-N silicone diodes with higher (or "normal") voltage drop.

For 50-60 Hz applications it's normally overkill to use fast diodes but not if you are an audiophile. Even I have used those in my latest Gainclone but I can't verify how much good the do.

For 50kHz- 1MHz applications choosing the right diode is the difference between success and failure!
