I'm using capacitors in series for higher voltage. I noticed that one of the capacitors was being overvoltaged and it turned out that an equalizing resistor was not soldered well. To avoid this in the future, I want to use LED indicators on each cap so that I can tell if everything is OK with a quick look inside the case. Can someone suggest how I can make it so that a green LED will be on when voltage across the cap is above 300 V and a red one when above 400 V? Since I need a total of 16 indicators, I need the smallest part count circuit that will do this. Any ideas?

Zener in series with resistor and LED, but neon lights stacked to 500V or so would do better. With a current limiting resistor of course...

What current are the equalising resistors carrying? An LED in series with each will glow if there's 0.5-30mA and show if the resistors are working.
