Hmm.. my title maybe a bit misleading. It should be "the Inside of a Silmic". The cap blown with a loud bang but only a small hole on top. Now I know those cuts on cap top is for safety reason.

Yes... much better than the whole can going off like a rocket... I've seen pics of pretty nasty radio cabinets on alt.binaries.pictures.radio
Like... there's the chassis, minus filter can... then above it... a nice size dark, discolored spot on the wood...... Tim

Appears that all electrolytics look the same on the inside..
What killed it? |

ChuckT has not specified what made it explode, could be he reversed it while testing or something like that.

Yes, mistakenly reverse the polarity.
It took about 2 minute for it to happen. Another one which is wire up the same way did not pop however, intead, the top of cap had grew a bump. After it pop, I peel off the metal can and found roll up metal and "paper". I thought ecaps is just liquid inside. I also have FC, but did compare side to side. I find Silmic are very musical and sometimes need a film bypass for the top fz. |

Yeah, they are moist or gel. They've been so for many decades actually...since wet 'lytics aren't very nice.

Most electrolytic capacitors have more or the less the construction as the Silmic. The material which is used between the aluminium foil may differ, it is silk and paper in these. The electrolytic itself is very essential for functioning of the cap and differs between brands and series/types. It is responsible for electrical parameters like ESR, 85 or 105 degrees Celsius max. temperature etc. The importance of the electrolytic fluid can be illustrated by the fact that the formula of a new electrolytic fluid ( P50 ) Nichicon invented for production of extreme low ESR caps was stolen by competitors in 2000. We know the results of that ! The way the caps are sealed can differ also, the more expensive long life types often are sealed with resin instead of the standard rubber gasket to avoid evaporation ( i.e. "drying out " ) of the electrolytic fluid. With high temperature types sometimes better quality rubber is used for the gasket.
