What is this component used for?

I'm planning to upgrade some components in my amplifier. I found four brown components that I'm not familiar with.

Two of them are shown in the picure. What are they and their purpose? Can we replace them with better ones? Please suggest.

Those are 4.7 uF capacitors. Film caps, decent quality. You could buy more fashionable ones, but they won't be any better functionally. Can't say anything about their purpose without a lot more information, like a schematic.

Anyway, could you please tell me how the code means "4.7 uF"?

Unfortunately I don't have its schematic, but what I can tell you now is that these film caps are located between an input section and driving section.

Generally, can they be replaced with the polypropylene type (i.e. SCR or solen)?

That type of cap with that type marking is marked in pF. First two digits are value and third digit is number of zeroes. So 475 is 4700000 pF = 4700 nF = 4.7 uF.

You can do that if you want, but how much benefit you'll get from a replacement depends on what their function are in the circuit.

They are poly, or at least look like it.

Appear to be good caps. I'd leave 'em alone.
