Default Regulator Drop Out

Getting regulated 12V in a car is a problem as the linear regulators generally need 3V drop across them to work. If your regulator is not rated as a "Low Dropout" type, the voltage output will not be regulated and about 2-3V below the battery voltage. Regardless, you may get erratic voltage.

For the 5V supply, you may want to consider one of the "Simple Switcher" series from National, like the LM2596. They work very well and will dissipate almost no heat.

drop the regulator...and use a simple CLC filter instead...since u already have 12V from the car...otherwise a good solution will be to use LDO regulators ( which may not work when u're starting the car) or a small SMPSU from National's line up of simple switchers...
