Default Surface Mount Caps for DC decoupling on a SOIC device

Anyone ever solder decoupling caps right to the leads of a SOIC device like a DAC? What size fits for a 10V cap? Thanks!

Common value for decoupling is .1uF. You could solder right to the leads, but why? They can be very close if just placed on PCB, which would make for a cleaner installation in any case.
