Couldn't you use a cascode if the Vce is too big.
When you use currents there might actually be a gain in it.
Set the base at a fixed voltage and the emitter towards the mirror, gives the mirror less Vce voltage swing to work against as well.

I am not too good at this but it seemed to work in my iv stage although i didn't get any gain in using it, no Vce problem.

don't dismiss emitter degeneration without looking at some #

roughly the improvement in matching, linearity, output z is porportional to the amount of local feedback

~= V(Rdegen)/26mV

so even a few hundred mV arcoss the degeneration Rs could improve things to a useful extent with a low voltage burden - certainly much less than 600mV
