Volume control help

I want to make an active volume control so to speak. basically i want to be able to turn the volume of my sub amp up past the volume setting on the HU. I am using the HU's built in amp for my mids and highs and the only preamp for my sub. I want to be able to turn the subs volume up without turning the mids and highs up. I know a bass boost circuit would work, but I am not sure of the pro's and con's of bass boost. I want it to be as simple as I can for what I want. The amp has a bass boost, and right now it is cranked up, but the bass is still way too weak. The only way to adjust it up is to adjust the bass on my HU and that is causing unwanted bass to go to my mids and highs. I could always put in high pass crossovers in-line with all of my speakers to keep out the bass, but I wanna do that as a last resort.
