Cool Tutorial: Soldering SMDs

A new day, a new tutorial . This time it's about soldering SMDs. Yesterday, besides trying to make a PCB with tiny traces, I also tried to solder SMDs and well, it's pretty easy actually if you know how to do it.

Check it out here: http://members.lycos.nl/anthonyvh/index.php?page=smd

Default SMD soldering

If you squirt rework solder flux on the chip so it's swimming in it, the solder blob on the iron doesn't form bridges at all. It's magic

Make your own tutorial, I do it the cheap way .

J/K, I'm sure that'll work too, but I don't know if I like the idea of my chips swimming in some kind of goo .

Very nice, thanks for the tutorial.

You can also do SMD soldering in a toaster oven, as shown here.

Thanks!

I know about the oven toaster thing, but I haven't tried it yet. The winner of a contest on Circuit Cellar made an reflow oven controller, so that you can use official reflow temperature profileswith a standard oven. I might make it one day. Check it out here: http://www.circuitcellar.com/renesas/winners/3323.htm

Hehe, thanks .

It's all in the PCB tutorial: go to a 2nd hand store. I don't know how you call it in English, but over here we have a "circulation" store where you can buy used clothes, books, ... and tanning beds . When I went to buy mine, they had 2 "big" ones (the one you can see on my website) and 1 smaller, so it shouldn't be a problem finding one.

Now, let's get back on topic .

I added some more info on how to check for solder bridges and solder bridge prevention.
Oh and I fixed some spelling mistakes too. Please tell me if you find more, I'm sure it's full of it .

I love your tutorials!

I have one question though, in you "PCB Making" tutorial, what is the purpose of the UV light? Like what does it do to the copper?

Its used to transfer your pattern onto the copper.

When you print your pattern on a transparent sheet, or various other ways.

I dont know what exactly the UV light does to the copper though, but you need to apply a coating before using it.
