old RCA transistors- what are they?

I recently stumbled upon these transistors... and have no clue what they are. They are all round case styles (TO-3 I suppose they would be). I have the following:

2x 38737 (small, on 1.25"x0.875"x0.5" heatsink)
2x 38736 (small, on 1.25"x0.875"x0.5" heatsink)
1x 38735 (small, not on heatsink)
4x 36892 (large, TO-3)
2x 2N4249 (small, old transistor package, not new silicon)
1x 2N3638 (medium, old package)
1x F2N3567 (medium, old package)
1x 61088 (metal can, only two leads) (no idea what it is)

Does anyone know what any of them are? Are they at all useful? Worth trying in any kind of amp? Anyone want them?

Medium-sized TO-3 is a TO-66, don't remember the small one (basically a TO-5 ("large" (for small signals that is) metal can) on a heatsink mounting tab). Don't see many these days!

I don't have any info on your transistors but I'd like to add some of my own: TO-3, #36212 and a pair of TO-5's press-fitted into small heatsinks: 40409 and 40410.

For the 2N (and any A/B/C/D, aka 2Sxxxx types) I'd suggest the usual: Dial Electronics, EleNota and Japanese Transistor Data.

The 40409 is the NPN complement of the 40410.

2N4249:
PNP Si Vcb 60V Vce 60V Veb 5V Ic ? Pd 0.2W Ft 40MHz hfe 280

2N3638:
PNP Si Vcb 25V Vce 25V Veb 4V Ic 0.5A Pd 0.3W Ft 100MHz hfe 67

I assume F2N3567 = 2N3567:
NPN Si Vcb 80V Vce 40V Veb 5V Ic 0.5A Pd 0.3W Ft 60MHz hfe 70

I don't have info about the 61088.

As luck would have it I am working on a guitar amp and you have EXACTLY :D The transistors that I need... SHAZAAM!!!
The list you have there is the complement that goes in a Kustom power amp circuit board 5065. Every one and the right quantities too...it is like a stock list for that power amp!
Are they all good???

These transistors sound like a special name to hide the actual device types. THey seem to be associated with the old "universal" RCA amplifier design, typically using 2N4249 PNP inputs, 2N3568 pre-driver, 40409/40410 drivers and possibly the 40411 output. The 61088 might have been the 1N3754 diode used for bias and small signal service.
Modern replacements could be the BC556 (input) BD139 pre-driver, BD139-BD140 driver and depending on the operating voltage, the 2N3055 or MJ15003 or MJ21194 output.
The 40411 was a selected 2N3772 (high voltage). Most modern 2N3772's probably could be used "off the shelf" but you should check Vceo if the supply total is >60V. Likewise if using a BD139 as a pre-driver (VAS) with rails totalling over 80V check that your device can handle the voltage. The Vcer rating of 100V should mean that most devices ought to work if Rb < 1k. The 40409/10 devices were TO-39 (TO-5 cropped lead) with a small heatsink. You could fashion a similar one from aluminium for the TO-126 case of the BD139/140. Note the lead-outs are different and will need the PCB tracks to be re-arranged to worjk.

Hi

A quick guide to possible replacements, but no guarantees!
38737 probably =40410 => BD140 with modified lead pin-outs and replacement aluminum heatsink
38736 probably=40409 => BD139 with same mod. lead pin-outs and replacement heatsink
38735 probably=40408 =>BD139
36892 probably=40411 => MJ15003 or selected high voltage 2N3772
(a high gain at 4A is preferable. The 2N3772 had a minimum gain around 35. To ensure a reduced load on the drivers you might consider some of the new planar devices eg MJL3281A BUT these have such a high frequency response you may need additional capacitors...)
2N4249 replace with BC556 (60V pnp)
2N3638 replace with BC546 (60V npn)
The bias diode could probably be replaced with a diode-connected BC546 or BC547.
YOu wil have to be a little careful - ideal if you can vary the power supply voltage first time out or check the Vceo's first.
