Have a mint akai gx-630d reel and its speed is too fast, there are many references to the servo board and a specific transistor, labelled tip47 on the schematic but actually in the player was an ft48. Many other references to it possibly being a tip48 as well... Sure enough it has open E-C... the store down the street had an nte51 for a couple dollars... Will it work correctly?

It should be open emitter to collector, if base is unconnected. Base to emitter should read like a diode, and shorting collector to base should lower the "ohm" reading (to emitter). If it really is bad, TIP47, 48, 49, and 50 are all increasing grades of the same part. NTE parts are hit or miss, but with something as generic as a TIP device you're usually safe.
