Hi Guys,
Are there better sounding caps then the Styro's.
Using it to shunt HF. Notice that different brand
different sound. Overall it's a little too zinggy for
my taste & bright sounding. Toshin have some
PPSD which are cooper foil not cheap & wondering
if it would be better.
Perhaps you guys can advice on other types.
Btw Silver mica also not for me tried Soshin.

Thanks in advance

I've used mostly the .1uf Russian K71-5 for power supply decoupling, snubber circuits, and the 1uf for speakers, mixed with polypropylene.
Recently I have tried some Mial.01uf to bypass an input coupling capacitor, and it worked well.
Those are the same as TRW, which look similar to the other clear-cased polystyrene parts.

The Russian surplus were from eBay, and the Mial came from Vetco Electronics.

Yes they do but there's always that added
sibilance on vocals especially when use
on output of analog stage. Crazy thing
is though all are made from the same
material different brands have different
sound . Have order some Toshin PPSD
caps to try. Will update once I get to
test them

Thanks again Phase

Hi Eduard,

Thank you so kindly. Unfortunately I'm not base in Jakarta.
I'm on an island called Batam which is very near to Singapore.
In reality there's just way too many caps to try. Have ordered
some Toshin PPSD cooper foil caps. Lets see how they behave
if not good then will look for the Philips KS that you mention.
Oh it's only 1000pf but rather surprise that it affects sound so
much especially when it purpose is only to shunt HF before
the output buffer of my AyA dac

Thank you again

Hello,
I remember in the eighties you could buy Japanese copper foil polystyrene caps at LA maison de l'audiophile in Paris.
I must look if i have 1 nF in stock. I think the ones i have are much bigger 22nF 68 nF
I might have Sovcor glass capacitor close to 1 nF or can create a value pretty close.
They fit in an envelop. Can also send them once i am in Jakarta. Up to you.
Greetings, Eduard

Hello,
The Philips KS i have are all 22 nf or more.
The Sovcor glass capacitors are all below 1000pF but can combine two to make very close to 1 nF.
They are VERY high tech. I got them in surplus store decades ago for cheap.
They are small.
It would not make much of cost difference if i post them from Europe or from Jakarta i guess.
Greetings, Eduard

The Russian k71-5 work well for power applications, don’t tend to ring and give the sibilance effect on their own, not to say they won’t realistically translate that from elsewhere in a system. They are supposedly several separate windings inside. I think the size of the case is a clue.

Also good, and made similar to those, are the Relcap RTE.

I am afraid I accidentally disposed of the last of my (8) k71 .1uf a while ago, much to my horror. I still have plenty of the .01uf.

Wow you guys are great thank you.
Will test the Toshin PPSD caps first.

Btw Phase, aren't the k71-5 PTFE caps ?

My tweaking journey has thought me much. It's always
a balancing act. Using good stuff does not equal good sound
& what works on 1 location does not mean it will too in another.
Hence I've got like 8 varieties of caps on my AYA dac. How come,
well arrived at this after 2 yrs of tweaking. Lol
For now it sounds very good to my ears.

Thks again Guys

Hi Sumotan! Have you tried them? Now I’m in modification of a dac and I’m looking for the best option for the output filter section. I need 2200pF and 1200pF values and found these toshins but no further info on them except this thread. Please write down your experiences if have. Thank you.
