Default Cheap Gold colored connectors are really gold?

I wonder if those cheap gold colored connectors sold on Ebay from China are really gold. If not, what is it?

The clue is in the description, 'Gold colour'. No they are only polished brass.

Real gold is selling for over $1200 per ounce these days. Keep that in mind when you see anything for sale claimed to be 'gold'.

Have a look at this paper, then you can make your own observations with regard to connectors costing so little.

Also worth bearing in mind that as gold is so malleable, that a single ounce can be beaten out into something like 9 square meters of gold leaf. Meaning a thin layer of gold is very roughly 2cents per sq cm..

When a connector is gold plated, the gold layer can be very thin, just a few atoms, so the gold content is tiny. Cheap connectors use very thin plating, that wears through after a few mating cycles

Advertised in the United States, Gold plate has to be a certain thickness, a couple of thousandths I think I remember but the number has been carefully removed from wikipedia.
Gold filled is thinner, gold flash is in the millionths of an inch.
I'd like to see somebody take one of these E-bay bandits to the FTC. Then sue them for fraud, take their PC and their copy machine in damages. Probably why nobody does; the best money to be made is sueing US manufacturers of talcum powder and other "dangerous" items.

That's the key....though I'm not sure how long it takes to 'wear through'
