Why use 2N3055s from ON?

MTBF 458,617,914 hours or 523 Centuries!

You know use them when it really has to last.

The other issue is that they moved manufacturing to where they got nice grants and other benefits to keep essentially an obsolete process going and cost competitive.

The MJ15015 transistor appears to have been developed as a competitor to the original RCA 2N3055. Motorola used to put this on a datasheet with their 2N3055A, which was a fully second breakdown compliant version of the 2N3055. But the ft is also slow (0.8MHz according to an old data sheet). So the MJ15015 would replace RCA (slow/hometaxial) transistors, but for modern epi replacements, maybe faster transistors would be better (MJ15003/4 were not bad at 2MHz). I tend to use MJ21193/4 for most "standard" apps up to 100W/pair.
