Never done it, but for others in the same plight, you might be able to remove the black anodizing with some sort of acid or perhaps a strong base like "easy off" oven cleaner or drano (lye), some rubber gloves and a 3M green scratch pad....
On a separate topic, I have found easy off is the best paint remover for steel or plastic items, and a heated lye solution is what the professionals use for paint stripping small objects...and even furniture!
