Transformer Opinion

I've had this power transformer for a while and thought I would try it for a tube project. I pulled the end bells off just to take a look, also thinking I might paint it black. It has a large copper band all the way around it. Is this desirable? It puts out ~600vct, 5v, 6.3vct. Was also looking for tips on painting to get a nice, even, glossy black. Didn't want it to have that "spray painted" look. Thanks

Hi,

The "bellyband" reduces stray magnetic fields,
by acting as a shorted turn for stray magnetics.
It's a sign of a decent transformer.

It probably had a baked enamel finish.
