I like the ESP project 05 PSU, however I wanted to do some experimenting CMOS devices and such that require 5V power sources, so I was wondering if the following schematic would be sufficient.

The part in red is the addition I made

Two questions;

1. crap, nevermind I firgured one out. Looking at the datasheet 14.5V is minimum for UA7812 to work, I just assumed a 12V wall wart would power a 12V Regulator :( And LM340 requires 10V at minimum.

2. What are LDO (low drop out) regulators. I see alot of them in the digital voltage levels. Are they better than standard voltage regulators?

So your saying something like this would work mush better?

LDO's advantage is their ability to regulate with a low voltage drop over it. Some can do it at 1V while normal regulators like 78xx need at least 3V. Some LDO have low noise as well. Other than that there is no real advantage.

A typical application for LDO is a 3.3V regulator fed from 5V.

And yes, the schematic will work.
