Default tkd 2cp2508 vs. stepped attenuator

Which of these would be sonically superior? The stepped attenuator would be using metal film resistors. Couldn't find anything searching here. I'm building a tubes4hifi preamp kit and it comes stock with mono gain attenuators (which I'm also debating replacing with Alps blue mono's or TKD 2cp600) and the main attenuator, which is 23 steps.

Hand wired resistors around a rotary switch can have capacitive feedthrough, depending upon how they're physically placed. Also, the wiring that sends the signal to the attenuator and receives it from the wiper can also be messed up.

The point is that it's hard to state in any absolute sense how well it will work out, since specific switches with carefully done layout can work really well, and a fool who knows nothing of the potential problems can end up constructing an attenuator whose frequency response can vary at each step.

These problems can generally be avoided by using low valued resistors and a tight, clean layout, and also by using proper shielded twisted pair for the input and a separate piece for the output, to minimize capacitive feedthrough.

Short summary: the TKD will be simpler, but the hand built attenuator will probably work better if you don't mess it up! Plus, you get to decide the gain of each click, whereas the TKD decides that for you.

Best of luck!
