use MKP capacitor instead of electrolytc for AC filter

Dear Diyer,

I am currently constructing a preamp and the schematic shows the power stage using polarised electrolytic capacitors to reduce the ripples. Can i change it to non polarized MKP capacitors? Any disadvantages?

You can and no, I don't see any disadvantages other than cost.

Arthur; Have built a Dyna - 70 clone using all Solen caps in the supply with good results, but as Frank points out it is expensive and some of the higher values may not be available.

The solution seen in many applications is a combo of electrolytics and film caps in paralel. Thats a little more affordable, and pretty much the same result.

Not to my ears but YMMV....

IMO if you can afford it put at least MKP or oilers behind the filter chokes....Assuming you use one.

Thanks for all the answers. The reason I asked because originally I planned to use blackgate but found it too expensive and do not have the voltage I need. So I plan to use SCR but only non-polarised version available

i am contemplating if i should use my Solen (47uF 630) on the PSU, or save it for something else (like Ultrapath).

what would be your suggestions?

1. Compare with MKP cap and Oil cap, which one is better in performance?

2. Other than cost/capacitance ration, any advantage of electroylite capacitor?

Also in which area the performance is better? (Or the most suitable area the MKP/Oil/Electroylite cap shall be used?)
