What effect does the gage of wire have on the acoustics of a passive crossover? I see that the thicker the gage to lower the resistance and higher the power rating. I have a crossover network that calls for a 16awg 1.5mf @ 0.4ohms, can I substitute it with one that is say, 14awg 1.5mf @ 0.22ohms? What effect will this have on the crossover network?
Thanks, D

very simple...you waste less power, and in the end of the day you may get less distortion cause the amp have to deliver less to achieve the same loudness.
My passive Xover chokes are wound of 2mm wire for the exact same reasons Magura

so the simple answer is "bigger is better"? To a certain degree of course.

yet another case where size does matter
![]() The upper size limit is only a matter of space/-money....both space and money will become an issue if you wanna get much under 0.15 ohm. If you wind it of 2.5mm wire you get approximately 0.15 ohm for a 1.5 mH air core inductor. Magura
