Have you considered the PCM1602? TI says is is not pin-for-pin compatible, but if you look at the pinouts, the differences are limited to a few connections that are either Vcc or GND on the PCM1605, and are NC (no internal connection) on the PCM1602. All other power, digital and analog I/O is the same. So it should solder in directly. I quickly compared the register set, and it too is almost identical. The only difference is an adjustable attenuation control rate on the 1605 and fixed on the 1602. This should make little or no difference, and the 1602 will probably work without issue in place of the 1605. At the very least, this substitution is worth a closer look.
