Hugo, I think there is something wrong with it, even if not
discussing ethical aspects. If we DIYers use the samples
programs restrictively, mostly asking for small number of
components that might be hard to source, I don't think
the companies mind. I might ask for two AD825s or two OPA637s,
for instance, since I cannot easily buy them locally. If I needed
more than two, or maybe four, I should definitely order them
from somewhere, even if it involves a lot of problems and extra
costs such as shipping and customs fees.

If too many people ask for large numbers of components, the
companies may eventually stop offering samples to private
persons and we all suffer from it.

Of course, they could save some money if it were possible to
check a box saying you don't have to ship with $100 courier
mail, I can wait.

Christer, I perfectly understand, I guess it’s just that subjective me that always tries to put in favour the poor from the rich.
It’s indeed a thin line and we already agree on the fact that costiss clearly never had the intention to fraud anything.
I see it more as being inventive. There’s nothing wrong with asking.
I think On-Semi and other companies have to decide for themselves if they’re willing to ship certain amounts or not.

/Hugo – simply doesn’t like the word beggar (No offence Analog_sa)

Hugo, I do in a sense see you point of view too, but he isn't
asking for samples of bread so he won't starve. I would like
a pair of B&W 801, or whatever that top line model is called,
but can't afford it. Maybe I should ask for samples? I only need
two of them. Guess I would need something like a Krell to
drive them too. Is d'Agostino generous with samples? I can
do with one stereo amp, I don't need mono blocks.

why don't you simply try to bypass the online samples forms
and email ON, or whatever company it was, telling them honestly
that you are a student, what you plan to use the devices for,
and that there is no local sales office. Ask nicely, and suggest
they use ordinary airmail only, in case the are willing to send you

I didn't think of it before, sorry Costiss, but if asking about
samples, bypassing the automated internet system, or if
asking your local distributor. Don't ask for samples, but say
you cannot find anywhere to buy these devices. A
distributor will most likely not want to bother with such
"microcustomers" so they will simply either give you them
for free or say sorry, we cannot help you.

I tried that as a teenager. I didn't even know of the concept
of samples, but needed a Fairchild IC I couldn't buy in the
component shops. I called Fairchild Sweden, explained
the situation and asked if it was possible to buy one directly
from them. I honestly meant to buy it. Their answere was,
no, I am sorry we cannot do that, but we can send you a
sample. This was late in the afternoon and the IC arrived by
mail next day.
