Default Any opinions on Kimber Kaps?

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has much experience using Kimber Kaps? I am looking for comparisons between Solen, Hovland, etc. I live in Salt Lake City, about 45 miles south of Ray Kimber, and can get them direct for good prices. They seem to be a fair amount less expensive than the Hovlands. My questions is, are the Kimber Kaps in the same league as the Hovlands? I'm in the middle of building a few crossovers, and am trying to keep the costs down without comprimising sonic quality. If I need to go with the Hovlands, I will. But, I would like to try some alternatives.

All I know is what I've read. I haven't heard of anyone saying they sucked...certainly I've gotten the impression that they are considered to be among the best out there.

I needed a couple of spendy 10f film caps a few months ago. I considered thr Kimber caps along with others. In the end I went with a couple of Auricaps because I got them for a better price than anything else (save the 'rather pedestrian' Solens).

From what I have read, I doubt you would be disapponted with the Kimbers. If price is even a little bit of a factor, compare with the Auricaps (one of the few high-end caps I have any experiance listening to...and if you're curious, the Auricaps do the best imitation of a straight piece of wire I have heard).

When we're talking about caps in this league, all do a pretty damn good job.

I know this is a way late reply, but may be helpful to someone. Cary Audio (also Audio Electronic Supply) use Kimber Kaps in their tube amps. When they offer an upgrade they substitute the Kimber for Jensen copper foil in oil capacitors. I have the AES SuperAmp 2 with Kimber Kaps and I'm quite amazed at this amps clarity and quickness.

I'd agree even though some would call them "sucker" parts. Some boutique parts are truly exceptional.

Then again, what industry cares about the "sound" of their parts anyway? Right?

So called "passive parts" are rarely as "passive" as they're supposed to be.
They're the "crayons" of the artist trying to unveil the truth.
