I'm looking at either wool or cotton battings to line the ported enclosures of my next project.
I hear that the chemical processing of the wool (pesticides, bleach ect..) can be problematic to the indoor quality so I'm only considering organic wool. I don't think cotton goes through such heavy processing so any run of the mill will do. now, organic wool is about 4 times more expensive than cotton, but does it also equate to better damping? please let us discuss |

We have used vinatge cotton & wool felt as damping in the past, preferring cotton. Now that we have access to UltraTouch (recycled denim mostly) felt and batting, we use little else.

Wool has a specific gravity of about 1.3 and cotton about 1.5 so you might as well go with the cotton.

It looks like the denim-based insulation is internet order only at the Evil Orange. I checked at one of the local stores while prowling around for something else, and they didn't have anything but the usual fiberglass and shredded cellulose. Lowe's has something similar under the "Frost King" brand, but it's only available in 1'' X 16" x 48" size. I may check it out after work on Monday, as I have some speakers I want to refurbish.
