Hello,OK I'm up-gradeing my 20yr old J.D.I- PRE-AMP+PSU, I'm looking to install some NEW smoothing Capacitors in to my (PSU) tp supply power to my PRE-AMP. I've been told to look at MUNDORF AG/AG+, RUBYCON ZL/ZLG, + JENSON 4-POLE'S (CAP'S) The MUNDORF'S seem very expensive The MUNDORF AG+(4-POLE) start at £15.00??? APX, So which is best??? for using in a power supply unit? + are the MUNDORF AG+ worth the money??? OR has anyone got experence of this type of install + what other CAP'S should i consider???.

Hi Popmaster,
To answer that question, you have to consider what sound you want to obtain when your finish working on it,caps, opamps and resistors are all in the same boat, they all sound different in any amp and depend on where they are replaced or put in the circuit, If I hear a amp I like I get a schematic and see what they have used,You will find many different opinions about who's best or how much was paided for this or that IT boils down to you what do you like ? Some caps will make a amp sound smooth ,some bright, midrange is great, ect. Search some of nelson Pass designs, some of his articles explain in common sense what and how to build a power supply,His designs don't change a whole lot ,so he's go it figured out what's to use,I built his F5 and the suggested power supply ,sounds amazing,Fast, crisp and great bass! I rebuilt a qsc a41 it's old,Bi polar,I used sprague caps 35000 uf for each rail ,I was amazed at how quiet it was at idle ,I was expecting some hum ,but no quiet and clean sounding, Check apex jr. he's on this site I have bought alot from him and he has some quality parts at reasonable prices,I wish I could say use this xxxxx but compare and see what makes your ears happy! Hi.I asked to my 30 year experienced customer about the capacitors in his designs. He says :
"Hi, If you like Tight, fast, sparkling, bright detail, good separation, you better choose Kendeil Caps like Naim Amps, but If you like Smooth, soft detail, deep bass, clear vocal, good separation also felt more comfortable in the ear, I suggest to use Roederstein Caps or Frako Caps. Actually in my opinion also electrical theory, the Capacitor at the Rectifier of Power supply did not recognized Class A or B, AB.,and you must remember F5 Amp build with Mosfet Transistor at the final, the Mosfet/FET characteristics similar to the Tubes, more heat much better sound !!." Thanks
