Are you sure the laser is gone?
They usually last for ever unless someone tweaks the laser current controls. The turntable motor can be changed. Andy .

Not certain, but I have tried cleaning the outer and inner lens. I will try replacing the caps on the driver board.
Trying to track down which resistor to measure the laser current across.

I have replaced the laser/swing arm with one from a CDM4/19 unit. I think with some success. The laser current has been set to the stated 50mv across the 4k7 resistor. And its working well with some disks, not at all with others.
I think (suggestions welcome) the problem now is the focus servo setting needs checking. In the absense of the official test disk I plan to use the error LED (Cambridge CD2) to try and find at least the center position. Not knowing how to put this player into service mode, I think setting with a normal disk playing is my best bet.
