Substitute Transistors for John Linsley Hood - 80 Watt AMP

Please can anybody help ? I have the Circuit boards to build another Linsley Hood 80 Watt Amp. But I am having problems finding some of the transistors and FET,s does anybody know of modern replacements that I can use with this circuit ;- BC447, BC448, BC214, BF870, 2N5459, VN120M. I have a full set of 2SJ50 and 2SK135 MOSFETS so Iam just stuck for the above. I built one in 1998 from a Hart Kit but my soldering was not very good in those days so purchased a set of circuit boards and MOSFET,s before they ceased trading, to do a better job as the sound quality is very good.

Many thanks :D

hi Martin
good to see someone else having a go sqeezing more out of this amp.

BC214 easily availible from at least 2 manufactures
BC447 easily availible, however sub Tosh 2SC2240 (different pin out)
BC448 easily availible, however sub Tosh 2SA970 (different pin out)
2N5459 easily availible
BF870 sub MJE15033 (different pin out)
VN120M sub Tosh 2SK216 (different pin out)

the pin outs differences is no problem on the hart board.
if you are in the uk i could point you to suppliers that stock the above.

These boards are availible from APJ Electronics here :- JLH 80W amplifier boards

Many Thanks for your reply, Is that not Leicester I have been a student of Roman Britain for many years. I would be most grateful for the names of surpliers. I have a pair of power AMP board's which I purchased from Hart just before they ceased trading. I have been running this since the 1990's and am very pleased with the sound. But my soldering in those days was a disgrace. So I have decided to do a better job of construction.

Many thanks

hi Martin
your right about the location.
these guys are excelent for semi conductors, particular Japanese devices
electronic component suppliers and distributors, Nikko Electronics for semiconductors, transistors, capacitors all major brands of spare and replacement parts

very good for some parts, resonable prices on resistors, transistors and film capacitors however they dont stock high quality electro caps.
http://www.rapidonline.com/

very good range of high quality electro caps and everything else
RS Components | Electronic and Electrical Components
and Farnell United Kingdom | world-leading distributor of electronic and maintenance, repair and operations products.

hope this helps, good luck

Hi Bob

Many thanks, I am reading through the mod's article. Are you still using a JLH 80 Watt.

Best wishes
Martin
