I recently tried to use some old hookup wire in a Pass F5 clone.
The wire is 22 gauge, silver coated copper, stranded, and teflon insulated, and was purchased from Allied Radio in about 1964!! (Allied part #49 TT 754, MIL spec MIL-W-16878/D).
When I carefully stripped and soldered this wire to gold plated RCA binding posts, I find that the wire is very brittle at the end of the solder flow up the wire. A very minor bend of the wire causes it to break.
I had used this wire extensively in the 1960s for backplane wiring of a DIY computer using Vector boards plugged into a card cage, and did not experience any problems with brittleness at that time.
Do any of your "old-timers" out there have similar experiences?
