Default MC3340 Electronic Attenuator substitute

The Motorola MC3340 has been discontinued. It was simple and I happily used it.
Can anyone tell me if there is a substitute that is simple to use as a Voltage controlled amplifier or attenuator please.

Thank-you,
Russell WIlliams

You may be able to use the National LM13700 which uses a different principle but can be used in voltage controlled gain mode

Simple, comparatively high noise and high THD%.

I've seen folks use a pot and a serial ADC to write a word to a digitally controlled pot, frankly if you're going to go this route you should consider something really great like the Texas Instruments PGA2310.

Maxim had some easily controllable digital pots.

OK, what's your "cutting edge" suggestion then?
