Switching off quickly then attaching a meter might have given you an opportunity to learn fault-tracing techniques.

Yep, that's the standard procedure. This time it was late and I was pretty tired and.... I just let it go. Laziness. This is the second time I do this. As for the reason of failure I can only think of two possible scenarios: the tube's central pin was missing so I may have plugged it the wrong way or it was a loose wire that I forgot to remove and may have caused a short (the cap was correctly wired).

Don't go hard on mistakes - they often teach you valuable things.
