what is NPN BJT "2961" -in Crown amp

I am working on a Crown Power Tech 2.1 amp. One of NPN transistor is labeled "2961". Any one know specs of it or full name of it?
On Crown Power Tech 3.1 schematic it is used opposit side of 2n4125 as if "2961 " as a complimentary pair to 2n4125. But 2n4123 is complementary to 2n4125 and Crown power tech 3.1 uses 2n4123 on opposit side of 2n4125 then it uses "2961" npn's. Can anybody clear this up??
Thanks in advance.

birdyman, Crown is a very customer friendly organization in my humble professional experience. If you call custoimer service there this morning, it is my sincere belief they will in fact answer any question you have.

Crown often labels their transistors with their own part numbers. For example from my parts drawers I see:

Crown C8753-5, which is a 2SA1186.
Crown C8574-3, which is a 2SC2837

There is no formula for translating their numbers to industry numbers. SO without Crown documentation, I have to get the information from Crown.

If you have a master Crown parts list, it generally identifies the generic transistor type in the description line. I would look it up for you, but my copy of that list is in another city on another computer.

Stocktrader could be right, is your mytery part a TO39? If it is a TO92 like the 2N4124, then I think the number is not short for a 2N number.

Certain Crown transistors are selected for characteristics. SO on your TO3 outputs for example you might find "#4" or something stamped onto them. You want to get replacements with the same number or within 1 at least in those cases. Only place to get those would be from Crown.

Crown will send you the service manual for your amp if you ask them. That would include the schematics, the parts layouts, and the parts lists, not to mention any adjustment procedures and specs.

And they might even send you a copy of their master parts listing.

And the only way I know to make any of that happen, is to...

Call Crown and ask.

I regret that you do not find this suggestion of use.

Crown 2961

Crown used a totally unique 4 digit part numbering scheme for their transistors which DIDN'T correlate to any "standard" 2N numbers.

They did make a "transistor service replacement chart" which I'm looking at right now. A "selected" Sprague 2N3859A is listed as their recommended replacement for the 2961. Good Luck.

It's a date code. It was made in the 61st week of 1929. :)

This is a very old post, but in case someone finds this posting while trying to fix Crown amps:

On a Crown Base3 repair manual I found a reference to the 2961 - its apparently a 2N3859.

This transistor is obsolete now and the best match found was a MPSA06.
All ratings are higher than the original, except the gain / bandwidth product which is 100MHz instead of 250MHz.

Old Old Thread but just landed here via google.
Looking at the datasheets for 2N2961 (TO-39 metal Can) and the 2N3859A from Charles' crown data sheet... I would say that the TO-92 plastic part marked '2961' is probably a 2N2961 specially made in a plastic case. I have seen some marked 'PN2961' but can't find a PN2961 data sheet anywhere.
In the MA2400 schematic, I can see 2961 paired with: 2N4125 and PN4250.
I can't see any 'special' reason for this being used instead of a 2N4123 - but there could be other reasons such as availability or a surplus of stock.
I'm going to use 2N4123 as an equivalent.

Did 2N4123 work?
