Hey
I am currently designing a class A amp. And I not sure witch power transistor i should use. It's a 30 W push-pull. Are there any good suggestions. Jimmi |

JIM:
Class A, is a great goal. But it is not a cheap one. There are all types of BJTs to use for your design. The question you should be asking yourself is "how much money/funds you are willing to part with". Class A and be inexpensive or expensive. It is up to you. Transistors 2N3055A 2N3772 MJ15015 MJ15022 I use the 2N5303. It is costly. But the ones I have, were given to me by a company that was throwing 100s of them away. I have 70 each left. No they are not sale. But will trade for Hitachi Mosfets. I recommend that you visit ESP, he has some designs and information on designing and building Class A power amps. It may save you time, money, and headaches. 30 Watts of Class A requires a lot of heat sink area. Heat sinks are costly if you do not know how to heat sink Class A power amp above 10 watts. If you do not know how to make your own heat sink, you are looking at a high cost item. Aluminum is not cheap. And forged aluminum is really not cheap. My power Class A are big Mono units. Pumping out 70 watts of power. The transformers are all hand wound from discarded welders, I picked up and rewind. The front section uses 2N3440/2N5415, and the drivers are doubled pumped 2N3439/2N5416. Gain is set at 22K. Power Supply is 45 -/+ at 10amps per channel. Caps are Photos at 330uf/100v. To form a dual bank of 24 per channel. For a total of 4000uf per level. 8000uf total. Heat Sinks are home made out of T bar stock and U formed 1/8" plate aluminum. The design is in Amateur Radio Handbook. Ok Jim Take Care. Hope to hear from you Ivey |
