Default A new generation of audio capacitors, BHC T-Network Capacitor (TNC) inside where ?

10 years ago this kind of capacitor was released special made for audio applications:

ALN20S1067DD 10000uF 63V
http://www.schuro.de/Daten/BHC/ALN20S.pdf
http://www.dnm.co.uk/capbhc.html
Schuro - Preislisten für T-Network Kondensatoren
http://www.bhc.co.uk/pdf/ALN20S1067DD.pdf
http://www.bhc.co.uk/slit_foil.htm

The danish brand "Thule Audio" uses this caps in some of their amplifier models of the "Spirit" line.
During a service I must still replace this, because the foil winding is loose (which means that they are dry, to hear is mostly a hum from the loudspeakers).
What could be the reason except a too large ambient temperature?

I ask this, because my own samples (2 pieces, only use for a short test) has also loose foil winding.

I cannot answer your question, but I think DNM amps do fine with the version build to their specs (dunno if the same).

Moreover, i was planning to try these caps and now i'm having some doubts...

At new condition the "ALN20S1067DD" (10000uF 63V) was clearly the best of all but only within this size (additional unfortunately to large limit in the life time).
If the size does not matter, then a normal computer grade cap with same capacity and voltage from F&T (Ftcap), Sprague, Rifa, Epcos or Vishay (BC components/Philips) is much more better in all cases, unfortunately also much more larger and additional screw terminals instead solder pins/legs (this means at the same time, not suitable to replace existing caps in small/medium amplifiers, only suitable for new projects or replace in big amps).

The best electrolytic caps for me are the GW series from Fischer & Tausche, Husum, Germany

Not only size does not matter but also capacity - i have margin to go up to 22,000uF (it's a CLC circuit on breadboard), min voltage 25VDC.
But cost matters.

I did compare the 10.000uF T-network specs with same and bigger caps from Rifa (PEH200 and PEH169 especially), BHC (ALS30,40 -now they are the same) and F&T (Mundorf). The bigger (lets say up to 22,000uF 40V) Rifa and BHC have lower ESR and ESL, the BHC als40 being the best for ESL.

Mundorf, which I trust very much have slightly worse ESR/ESL, the best being the 22,000uF 50V.

AFAIK, these british guys got F&T to make the 22,000uF 25V with identical specs to the M-lythics:

Price is good.
But i'd rather take the 50VDC version that has the best ESR of their line

Will check that link

The 100VDV 22,000uf model is truly excellent

Looking at the specs, you'll have a hard time finding a cap that beats the Rifa PEH-169.

Unfortunately they cost a fortune, but they last almost forever. I have just recently had a 10 years old amp I built for a friend, in for a service check. The Rifa caps still measured like new. The Nishicon gold tunes did however not seem to be in such great condition.

Best electrolytic capacitors

This thread I have start to get informations about the amplifier brands/models where are inside BHC T-Network Capacitors (TNC) - please read the headline and post #1

I hope you used an impedance bridge, as I regularly find dead caps in old gear that measure fine with the usual capacitance-function of the DMM.

Problem is usually its impedance goes up, or leakage. Capacitance is usually ok.

Have fun, Hannes
