Basically there are two sorts of capacitors: the polarised and the non-polarized caps.

The upper one on the picture is a radial polarised cap. You can clearly see the -sign corresponding to the shortest lead.
Non-polarised caps often have the inscription BP that means bipolar. The lower cap is an axial bipolar type.
The BP-types don’t care about polarity as the name says.
With the polarised types you get a nice bang when applying wrong polarity.
