Can anyone comment on the subject mosfets for suitability in audio power amp applications?

Sure, Hitachi J114/K400 can and have been used for audio power amps.
Neither meat nor fish, they require a bias level that suits a vertical MOSFET but have similar low transconductance of a Lateral. Means having to use a steep rail voltage and/or plenty of these devices in parallel. OK in the old days, when vertical MOSFETs were less educated and a lot more expensive. Nowadays you'd have to find 'm by the cheap for them to hold up against the steep vertical competition, i reckon. Same goes for J118/K413 and J119/K414
