Default Help determining capacitor and resistor values. Newbie.

So. My first post here. Hello everyone.

I've been learning a little about electronics the past few years. Mainly because I like to collects old audio gear. And finding people to work on my stuff is near impossible. I have found lots of web pages on this topic. But still find myself confused on a regular basis by whats printed on caps and resistors. So I'm hoping there will be someone (or more than one) on this site who will take time out to help my identify things I can't.

So first off. Identifing a wire wound resistor.

I have an old AKAI R2R that the tape control buttons stoppd functioning on. Its a 280DSS and I understand its a common problem with this unit. It was cutting out now and then. And finaly quite altogether. I heard the relays on these sometimes carbon up or something and cleaning the points can get them going again. But as soon as I got the back off I saw a white sand type wirewound resistor on the PSU that was cracked and crumbling. So maybe this is the culprite. At any rate it must have some purpose and needs to be replaced.

The code is "5W 45(ohm sign)K" So is this just 45 ohms. Or 45 000 ohms.

Well that should be easy to answer but isn't.
Have a look here,
Resistor FAQ

I would say from your description that it's 45 ohm and the K is the tolerance.

Have you measured it ?

On a practical level if it's on the "low voltage" side of a circuit then it's 45 ohm.
You would need 470 volts DC across 45000 ohms to get up to 5 watts dissipation.

It's more or less impossible to make a wire wound 45 kohms resistor. If you take a picture when you are asking about parts makes it much easier to give good answers.

as they say it's probably a 45r (45ohms) resistor.
It will be far easier to find a 47r 5W WW resistor.
If need be it can be paralleled with a 1k1 or 1k0 500mW metal film resistor to reduce the effective value to close to 45r..

Default Thanks

Hi guys. Thanks for all the info. This is a solid sate deck so I doubt there is 470V anywhere. So I'll try 45ohm.
I was going to post a pic. I have to get logged back ino photobucket so I can post some decent pics. I have more parts I can not figure. I'll review the resistor faq.

Thanks.

Just going to practice my photobucket skills.

This was the first cap I asked about.

Now for the next.

So on the next capacitor in question. The code is 1.2K220AC. Since its rather large. I doubt its a PF. So I'm thinking its 1200 uf with a 220 volt ac rating. Am I close??

This capacitor is on a three cartridge 8 track player. The reason I want to change this. Is that it makes this consistant motor (I assume) noise in the audio output. while playing. I believe this cap may have something to do with that. Otherwise the unit functions great.
