Hello, guys. I recently got an aged amp for my car. It's going on subwoofer duty, and while I enjoy SQ, I'm not the biggest SQ guy... nor am I a huge SPL person. At this time, I don't have a lot of money I want to invest in attempting to make my car a good listening area... so, I deal with it.
Now, I'll digress... my question is in regard to capacitors. I know very little about circuits at the moment. The question is, if there are 80v 2200 uF capacitors, which I was told some were dead, would it be with out consequence (negative consequence.) to put in an 80v 4700uF capacitor. I'm unsure of which specifications of the capacitor matter in terms of board design and proper running situations. The capacitors in there now are 80v 220uF 80*C. |

Caps of that size are used for either power supply filtering or output coupling, and going from 2200 uF to 4700 uF may improve low frequency response and/or improve the signal-to-noise ratio. It should not cause a problem. If it were me, I'd replace all the caps at the same time. Capacitors tend to fail after they reach a certain age, depending on the temperature they have been exposed to. I like to use 105*C caps to prolong the life of the device.
