Default Correct way to test different sized chokes (analog filtering)?

I'm going to try a range of uH value toroid inductors (20uH to 500uH) this week in an attempt to filter out digital images/hash of my filterless dac. Trying to strike the best balance of reducing the hash/HF noise without flattening the presentation too much. These chokes will just be in series with the output of the analog stage. Couple questions:

* must each choke burn in for some length of time, or is it pretty much immediate (such that I can rifle through the various uH values quickly)?

* can I use alligator clips or must I solder them to hear what each choke is cable of ?

Thanks!
