Default Non-obsolete 5V LDO regulator in TO-3 package?

Is there a 5V (>= 3A) LDO regulator in a TO-3 package which is not obsolete?

Any experience putting TO-220/TO-247 packages with a chip-mounted heat-sink into boards originally built for a TO-3? It wouldn't be too hard to make a stand-off mounted sub-assembly.

You could try the NTE931, but it is not LDO. To my knowledge ST was the last major mfr of the TO-3 regulators, and I don't see it available on their site.

I had some LT1083 in TO-3 but sold them -- now obsolete.

Looking at data sheets it appears that the TO-247/TO-3P packages have the same spacing between the outer leads as the metal TO-3. The TO-247/TO-3P center lead+tab and TO3 case are the output. So it'd be easy to cut out a piece of aluminum, mount a big enough heat sink to it, and bolt it to the board with insulated TO-3 mounting hardware, with a jumper to ring terminal on the appropriate mounting screw.

Bending those leads 90 degrees .075" from the case will allow the mounting hole to line up with the stud that's offset in the long direction but would cause the input and output leads to be reversed; that solution with a few cut traces and jumpers would do the trick but be more hackish.

LT1083-5 and LT1084-5 are both available in the TO-3P package.

Would an LM323K - TO-3 work for you?
