hi all
i read an article on cap replacement that recommended replacing all caps with polypropylenes (http://web.archive.org/web/200308071...ckcap.htm#more) does this mean i can replace polarized electrolytics with non-polarized polypropylenes? is that article a little dated? finally, any good sources, especially smd types. my usual soursces don't seem to have to great a selection in that type. thanks |

This article is about signal path capacitors. The article might be a little dated, but it's conclusions are still valid.
Replacing signal path electrolytic caps with similar film caps is a good idea, but it won't always be practical. Compare the size of a 10uF film cap to a 10uF electrolytic cap! The generally accepted audio hierarchy for signal path caps is (from best to worst): - Teflon - Polystyrene - Polycarbonate - Polypropylene - Polyester - Electrolytic - Tantalum And within the film types, you'll get better performance out of film and foil types, over metalised film types. Note that this is all a generalisation, there are many things to consider. Best advice is to look at what other people are using! Good places to fine these caps is eBay, Parts Connexion, Percy Audio and the heaps of other online audio components stores. |
