I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but what is the need for the four and five-pin electrolytic capacitors over a two-pin snap in type...apart from the obvious. What are they used for and can they be used in a circuit where there were previously two-pin snap-in types????
Could I someone give me practical examples of where these multi-pin types are used?? Cheers in advance |

Hi
two reasons 1) Mounting stability ie used for larger case sizes generally 2) Special four terminal caps with input/output are used when esl/esr is a concern esp. on SMPS applications. (IMO more rare)

So I can''t use them in a standard transformer/rectifier,reservoir cap sort of power supply??

For that... smoke'm if you've got em. Just make sure what terminal is what ...single connections are ok.

Cheers infinia,
So could I use one of these instead of two two-pin snap-in type electrolytics. I ask this because I am having trouble finding two 63v 15,000uF reservoir caps in my NAD C326 BEE. The ones in there are quite slim in design and I was hoping that i could get away with using one of the multi pin types instead. Any suggestions????? Gareth |

Most mult-pin snap-in caps are just a single cap, so you still need two. To make sure... find the data sheet. You also could use an analog ohm meter to check as well.

Thanks guys,
The diameter of the original caps is approximately 33mm. They seem to be quite slim in relation to their capacitiance. There are two of them right next to each other and with only a couple of mil surrounding them to 'play-with'. Maybe i should get a photo of them in-situ. I would like to upgrade them, they are made by a company called KSC |
