I remember Allen Wright just used clear polyurethane spray to stop oxidation on his copper speaker ribbon cable projects. Would that suffice?

A quality poly spray will work, but they also make a spray coating specifically for copper/brass called "Staybrite".

If it's lacquer, it will have more of a tendency to flake/crack that polyurethane. While I hate using poly coats on wood, it would be well suited for metals that might do some flexing/bending.
