What are "J505" semiconductors?

They are FET type constant current devices, currently made by Siliconix, quite expensive in Australia I am not sure over there, try Googling and you should end up with a Data sheet, from that may be reference to an application note, and then there is Wikipaedia
Some information on the Erno Borbly site

Mr Green,

there's an additional J511 CRD (U1) between the two green led pairs in the amplifier schematic.

A bunch of equivalent CRD numbers can replace the J500 Siliconix series, CRDs have become pretty obsolete, sources have raised the price levels accordingly.
Other cheaper option is replacing the current regulator diodes by a simple CCS, a JFET costs a few dimes, not as pretty on the boards as a tiny CRD though.
