Peter Daniel did a thread on potentiometers, and one of the ones he tried, an Alpha, was quite small but had decent performance. See the thread here , the pot I'm talking about is at the far left of the picture in the first post. PD bought that particular pot from New Zealand, where I am, for some reason, but I am sure it can be sourced elsewhere.

Do you have anything against a digital volume control? Rotary encoders are usually thin and shouldn't get in the way.

Check out the project page for this simple PGA2320 volume control........

If it looks like something you might be interested in, I have a bunch of extra PCBs and pre-programmed microcontrollers. This might need an input buffer in front of it depending on your source output impedance.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
