Default Need help lifting pin

Hi,

Very little experience with SOIC (only soldered a couple of PGA2320 so far). I need to lift pin 3 of the WM8804 in a Twistedpearaudio receiver board in order to use the chip in S/W mode. It is currently connected to the GND plane.

What is the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance

i use a tiny hook made from a small spring. the hook is small enough to hook just one pin of an SOIC. the rest of the spring is straightened out and mounted with tape to a desoldering probe to facilitate a handle. i insert the hook between the pin i want to lift and the one next to it and then rotate the hook to grab the pin i want to lift. then i heat up the solder and pop the pin off the pad. be careful, as some of these pins can be brittle and easily broken

Very nice, thanks. Spring wire hook is a great idea.

did you lift the pin yet?

The spring is a very good way if you have enough space between pins. I spend alot of time soldering surface mounts IC's (smaller then SOIC) so i have gotten decent at it, but i use a small fine point utility knife and gently slide the tip under pin3, then heat the bottom of pin3 with a iron (make sure the tip is tinned) and then leverage the knife on pin2 until pin 3 lifts up. clean up excess solder with solder wick/sucker and your set

good luck.
